The Art of Pulp Fiction: An Illustrated History of Vintage Paperbacks

in6dcLV

Pubblicato da IDW
Data di pubblicazione: settembre 2021
Lingua: inglese
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 168405799X
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1684057993

The Art of Pulp Fiction: An Illustrated History of Vintage Paperbacks chronicles the history of pocket-sized paperbound books designed for mass-market consumption, specifically concentrating on the period from 1940 to 1970. These three decades saw paperbacks eclipse cheap pulp magazines and expensive clothbound books as the most popular delivery vehicle for escapist fiction. To catch the eyes of potential buyers they were adorned with covers that were invariably vibrant, frequently garish, and occasionally lurid. Today the early paperbacks-like the earlier pulps, inexpensively produced and considered disposable by casual readers-are treasured collector's items.

Award-winning editor Ed Hulse (The Art of the Pulps and The Blood: Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction) comprehensively covers the pulp-fiction paperback's heyday. Hulse writes the individual chapter introductions and the captions, while a team of genre specialists and art aficionados contribute the special features included in each chapter. These focus on particularly important authors, artists, publishers, and sub-genres.

Illustrated with more than 500 memorable covers and original cover paintings. Hulse's extensive captions, meanwhile, offer a running commentary on this significant genre, and also contain many obscure but entertaining factoids. Images used in The Art of Pulp Fiction have been sourced from the largest American paperback collections in private hands, and have been curated with rarity in mind, as well as graphic appeal. Consequently, many covers are reproduced here for the first time since the books were first issued.

With an overall Introduction by Richard A. Lupoff, novelist, essayist, pop-culture historian, and author of The Great American Paperback (2001).

Champions of Flight

Anno di pubblicazione: 2019
Lingua: inglese
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1612007791
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1612007793

CITAZIONE
Champions of Flight celebrates the work of Clayton Joseph Knight (1891–1969) and William John Heaslip (1898–1970), the two preeminent American aviation artists of their time, as they chronicled the golden age of aviation—from Charles Lindbergh's epochal transatlantic flight through the most devastating war in world history (1927–1945). Knight and Heaslip were experienced military men and formally trained artists who, combining an authenticity of experience and an artistic mastery of illustration, produced powerful artwork that influenced a generation of Americans, creating air-minded adults and youngsters, many of whom flocked to US military service after Pearl Harbor.Aviation became deeply embedded into America’s culture during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Americans became fascinated by aviation celebrities, watched air spectacles, aviation movies and newsreels, and devoured books, aviation industry ads, magazine articles, and Sunday comics featuring pilot heroes. Artists Knight and Heaslip—both of whom were adept as draftsmen, painters and printmakers—fueled the imagination of these Americans through prolific illustrations and artwork that appeared in many diverse publications of the time. Over a period of almost twenty years, Clayton Knight and William Heaslip championed their love of flight through their art, and they did so with enthusiasm, integrity, and generosity. This book, featuring over 400 illustrations and photos, is a tribute to their legacy.

36 vues de la Tour Eiffel

ymPtrUk

Artista: Henri Rivière
Pubblicato da Locus Solus
Data di pubblicazione: giugno 2022
Lingua: francese
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 2368334009
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-2368334003

Things That Were Made for Love: The Songsheet Art of Sydney Leff 1924-1932

ho374Si

Fn6TMVt

Pubblicato da New Texture
Anno di pubblicazione: 2022
Lingua: inglese
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1943444331
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1943444335

Until shortly after World War II, the sale of sheet music was the primary measure of a song's success; most composers earned more from printed music sheets than from records. The most popular songs sold literally millions of copies, and colorful covers attracted customers almost as powerfully as the songs themselves inside. Artists like Sydney Leff, who created those covers, made that happen. They were the truly unsung artists of Tin Pan Alley.

"A monograph about Sydney Leff is long overdue. Part of the explanation for this work being neglected is that sheet music cover art was long viewed as one of the lowest forms of commercial art. Even some commercial artists deemed it to be beneath them. It was not viewed as something of value.

"Now, after Pop Art and other art movements challenged the high/low distinction in art, we are able to look at this artwork without the blinders of that old paradigm. And what do we see? Among other things, a contemporaneous visual expression of the Great American Songbook. We see a visual world that is a riotous collision and cross-pollination of styles, like jazz. We see the heady transitional period between the World Wars, between the "weird old America" and the post-WWII global superpower.

"We also see something by, from, and about New York City, which was the center of the world for popular music production and publication in the 1920s and 1930s. We see and feel the push and pull between the gloomy realities of the Depression years and people's yearning for escape, fantasy, beauty, joy, and transcendence."

-Norman Gholson von Holtzendorff, from his introduction

Bill Ward: The Fantagraphics Studio Edition

Blh5Kjo

Previsto per ottobre 2023
Pubblicato da Fantagraphics
Lingua: inglese

Bill Ward’s glamour girls were the staples of countless men’s and humor magazines, where they shared the pages with cult models like Bettie Page, Tina Louise, and Julie Newmar, and cartoons by fellow “good girl” artists such as Archie’s Dan Decarlo and Playboy’s Jack Cole. What set Ward apart―and above―his talented contemporaries in terms of sheer image-making was his use of the conte crayon. When drawn on simple newsprint stock, this potent combination created Ward’s trademark gossamer sheen on his women’s thigh-high stockings.

This Fantagraphics Studio edition showcases the best of Ward’s Humorama work and includes a healthy number of what became known as his “telephone girls.” Tame by today’s standards, Ward’s telephone girls were always caught in candid moments when they just happened to be talking on the phone dressed in gossamer lingerie in innocently provocative poses.

The majority of the images in this volume were drawn between 1955 and 1965 when Ward was at the height of his skill. They have been scanned in super high-solution from original art and reproduced to highlight every sheen and accentuate every curve to its fullest. The book not only reproduces more than 150 of Ward’s most beautifully rendered illustrations, but also serves as a time capsule to a more innocent moment in pop culture when these images were shocking.

The Fantagraphics Studio Edition also features an introduction by fashion/style icon and burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese. An original pinup art collector herself, Dita was mostly recently featured in Taylor Swift’s music video “Bejeweled.”

True Crime, True North - The Golden Age of Canadian Pulp Magazines

TbB4rm0

Anno di pubblicazione: 2005
Lingua: inglese

This lively book takes a loving look at the Canadian true crime pulps of the World War II era — their bold, brassy covers, spicy advertisements, and stories of murder, robbery, sex, and violence. With vivid archival images of both magazine covers and ads, True Crime, True North examines the themes that characterized the genre in Canada: the unquestioned adherence to retributive justice, the unwavering faith in lawmen, and the enduring affection for Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The authors also trace pulp writers' preoccupation with jealousy and betrayal, the deadly consequences of greed, and the growing menace of "sex fiends."
